Located within Toronto General Hospital (University Health Network), we approach our design and evaluation process leveraging a strong foundation in human factors, rigorous research, and deep clinical domain expertise. To say that we know healthcare is an understatement.
As a Human Factors Specialist, you will apply human factors principles from cognitive psychology, kinesiology, industrial and systems design engineering to the design and evaluation of best-in-class medical devices and technologies, environments, and processes. You’ll also work with clinical teams to support the reduction of preventable patient injuries and help us care safely for our patients. What you’ll be doing:
- Performing ethnographic studies on clinical users and environments to better understand workflows, tasks, and experiences
- Planning, conducting and supporting usability testing including: developing test scenarios, recruiting participants, designing and analyzing surveys, setting up labs, facilitating, note-taking and travelling to remote test sites (approximately 20% of the time)
- Performing data analysis, developing design recommendations and conclusions, and reporting, presenting and publishing findings
- Working rapidly and collaboratively within teams

What you need to have:
- Completion of a bachelor’s degree in an undergraduate degree program in Human Factors Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Systems Design Engineering, Cognitive Psychology, or recognized equivalent
- Human Factors experience (specifically in a highly-regulated, hospital or healthcare environment is preferred)
- In-depth knowledge of human factors principles and methods including ethnographic research, heuristic analysis, and usability testing
- Excellent problem recognition and problem solving skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills and customer service skills.
- Effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to set priorities.
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work effectively as a team member
- Ability to work as an autonomous professional
- At minimum, two years of related job experience
- Must be legally permitted to work in Canada. Note that this is a hybrid position that requires some work on site
What would be nice to see:
- Experience with medical device technology
- Experience with: Root Cause Analysis, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, Cognitive Task Analysis, etc.
- Strong IT and digital AV background and skills
- Project Management experience
- Memberships in HF professional organization preferred.
- Ability and willingness to travel for business strongly preferred
