Summer Design Internships 2018

Deadline February 28 2018

Help us design the future of healthcare

At Healthcare Human Factors, we are driven by the belief that healthcare should be safe, effective, but also amazing for everyone involved. Based out of Toronto General Hospital at UHN, we are in the unique position of being embedded in the healthcare system, enabling us to work side-by-side with the patients and clinicians that we are partnered with. Our clients include local startups, innovative physicians within UHN, and global medtech companies.

We are looking for two Design Interns (Digital Product Designer & Communications Designer) to join our team. As Design Interns, you’ll truly be members of our team, working alongside our senior designers and HF engineers to change the way healthcare is delivered both locally and globally.

What you’ll do day-to-day as a Digital Product Design Intern

  • Collaborate with our interdisciplinary team in an open work environment to build amazing, interactive products and tackle complex UX/UI design challenges
  • Participate in in primary research including ethnography and usability testing — you’ll really get to know who you’re designing for!
  • Create user experience maps, scenarios, flows, wireframes and interactive prototypes
  • Contribute to design reviews with the team and/or clients; both as a presenter and a constructive critic
  • Create UI specification docs and collaborating with developers
  • Advocate for the user throughout the entire design process
  • Bonus – create animations, motion graphics, and micro-interactions for our products

What you’ll do day-to-day as a Communications Design Intern

  • Design a variety of engaging marketing artifacts, internal collateral, and client deliverables
  • Work collaboratively with other team members to identify and seize design opportunities to improve our brand and visual communications strategies
  • Design a wide range of digital and print collateral including: graphics, event materials, presentations, video assets and more—from concept to production
  • Developing templates that give other team members the independence to quickly and smoothly produce great looking work with minimum effort
  • Proactively seeking out and feedback and striving for constant improvement
  • Shoot and edit photos and video for our projects, website and social media
  • Bonus – record and edit audio for a podcast

You should apply if you want

  • To have real and obvious positive impact in the world
  • To learn and grow with the best in the industry
  • A work culture that values authenticity, openness, and diversity
  • To join a team of designers, engineers, and scientists, all with a single focus on designing great tools, systems, and materials for patients and care providers

Things you’ll need

  • Strong visual design fundamentals
  • A solid portfolio demonstrating your creative accomplishments and design process
  • Ability to clearly communicate your insights and back-up your design ideas
  • A passion for details, but also the ability to zoom out to see the big picture
  • Currently attending or recently graduated from a degree program in Graphic Design, Interaction Design, Product Design, Industrial Design, Human Computer Interaction or similar field

How to apply

Fill out this survey (or hit the Apply Now button below) and submit the following items by Feb.28th 2018:

  • Cover Letter — tell us why you’re the right person for this job specifically
  • Resume or CV — highlighting applicable experience
  • Portfolio — showing us your thinking, process, and end-product (can link to an online or PDF version)

For your cover letter — we want to see something that shows us who you really are, why you really want to work with us, what value you would bring to our team, what you love about designing for healthcare, and what books/blogs/podcasts you’re into. FYI we typically get 100+ applications for these internships — a compelling cover letter and a solid portfolio are the best way to get an interview.
